Introduction

The Republic of San Marino, one of the smallest countries in the world, is a state within a state which is located in southern Europe and surrounded by Italy. The origins of the Republic of San Marino’s postal history were very far away. Beginning on October 7, 1607, when the Prince and the Sovereign Council nominated a postal officer to send and receive mail to Rimini to ensure San Marino had an exchange with the outside time. Therefore, San Marino is the first country to establish a public post service organization in the world. San Marino’s stamps are only valid within the country, and most of them are sold to philatelists, forming the source of its income.
